IEM Katowice and the Spodek Arena have been fundamental since we set out to take esports to the biggest stages in the world. Starting in 2013 as a centerpiece of the League of Legends competitive calendar, the event has grown year after year, especially since the introduction of CS:GO in 2014, when it hosted the second-ever Major in the game’s history. From that day on, our annual Counter-Strike tournament has been one of the main attractions in the global esports calendar. It's an experience every fan wants to have, it’s a stage where every player wants to perform at their best.
A turbulent IEM Katowice 2020 broke viewership records for a non-major Counter-Strike event with over 1,000,000 eyes upon the Spodek Arena. 16 elite teams went to battle for the lionshare of $500,000 and title for the Home of Esports. The frenetic French tore their way through the prestigious event and defeated fearsome teams such as 100 Thieves, Team Liquid, mousesports and Fnatic. However, an astoundingly strong side of Natus Vincere rampaged throughout the event with the world’s most renowned player s1mple at the forefront. Natus Vincere eviscerated the play-offs without dropping a map, defeating both Team Liquid and Astralis in 2-0 fashion. The Ukranian-Russian mix didn’t stop their flawless run there, in the Grand Final they brutally defeated G2 3-0 (16:4, 16:13 and 16:2) before claiming the IEM Katowice 2020 title with s1mple earning the MVP medallion!
The 2019 IEM Katowice CS:GO Major was a crowning moment in esports history. Breaking all sorts of audience records across the globe, the tournament culminated as two great stories clashed on championship Sunday. In one corner we had ENCE, the Finnish underdogs who had to play their way into the Major all the way from open qualifiers. In the other, the all-conquering Danish juggernaut squad Astralis. The Danes reaffirmed their status as the top team at the time with a dominant performance through every stage of the competition and did not disappoint in the Grand Final. They won the series 2-0 and became the first team to complete the $1,000,000 Intel® Grand Slam, taking home one of the biggest paydays in CS:GO history.
The previous year, it was all about nail-biting and very even matchups. FaZe Clan and Fnatic reigned supreme over the rest of the field and delivered a Grand Final for the ages. With both teams splitting honors in the first four matches, the Spodek hosted a thrilling fifth and decisive game that was only resolved in overtime. Fnatic will remember this victory for as long as their banner flies in the world esports stage.
In 2017, we experienced another legendary event and top tier moments at Intel® Extreme Masters Katowice. Astralis finally were crowned kings of Counter-Strike as they reigned supreme and secured their place in the history books.
