Immortals were invited to IEM Oakland 2017 based on their world ranking position in North America with their roster of boltz, steel, zqk, horvy and destiny. Player Visa issues stemming from employment prior to joining Immortals would not allow for entry into the United States for the competition.
Therefore, Immortals requested a change to their roster that would leave only two out of five players from their original invited lineup left competing.
According to the IEM rulebook, a team must keep a majority of their lineup to retain their qualifying spot in an IEM tournament. Because Immortals will not be able to field the majority of their invited roster, by rule they are forced to withdraw their qualifying spot in IEM Oakland 2017.
2.12.4 Lineup Restriction between Qualifier and Event
In the time period between the first qualifier and the final of an event, a participating team must use a majority of the lineup which they first fielded. The rule also applies to invited teams, in which case the starting five at the time of invitation is relevant to a ruling. Seasonal events are not considered qualifiers for the World Championship, in the sense of this rule. Instead, teams qualified from those will be treated as if they had been invited at the time of the start of the last qualifier.
Renegades are the next North American team that qualify for IEM Oakland 2017 based on their place in the world rankings.
